We all know that feeling, wanting to tear through a pile of junk food, bags of chips, ice cream, a whole pizza, chocolate and everything else you can find in the fridge when you’re high. But why do you get the munchies? And why do you get them less often after using cannabis for a longer period of time? We explain it all in this blog post!

This is why you get the munchies

Weed and hashish both contain tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is the chemical that makes you feel good when you smoke marijuana or hashish. THC imitates a specific substance in your brain, namely: anandamide. Anandamide sends chemical messages between your nerve cells (neurons) throughout the nervous system. In other words, anandamide binds to receptors in your brain. By doing that it can play a role in your feeling of pain, depression, memory, fertility, and appetite. Whenever you haven’t eaten enough, your body will release the anandamide, which will then bind to the receptors that regulate the feeling of hunger. It’s basically your body’s version of THC, which does exactly the same. Next to signaling hunger, THC also boosts your metabolism, which makes you get hungry even quicker.

Does your body get used to THC?

If it’s the first time you’re using cannabis, you’ll notice that you’re craving (bad) food a lot. If you don’t use cannabis on a regular basis or long-term, this feeling will come back every time you use it. However, if you use cannabis on a regular basis or long-term, your brain will get used to the effects of THC. Therefore, you’ll get the munchies less often.

How do you prepare for the munchies?

Before you light up again, it’s a good idea to prepare for your munchies. That way you’ll be sure you won’t tear through another pile of really unhealthy food. One trip to the store and a few minutes of prep is all you need to not be riddled with self-hatred after eating a load of bad food. The best thing to do to prepare for your munchies is eating a good meal before you use cannabis. This will make sure you’ll feel full again a little bit quicker. Another smart thing to do is to smoke before you’re planning to have dinner. That way you won’t eat any ‘extra’ food by filling your stomach with food that you were going to eat anyway. Don’t want to use cannabis before dinner? Then it’s good to make sure you have some (good) food nearby. Burritos, wraps, pizza French toast, taco’s, sandwiches and grilled cheese are nice options.
