What is a vaporizer?

A vaporizer is a device which is used to extract or release the active substances from plant material. In most cases vaporizers are used for tobacco or cannabis. It’s also known as an alternative to smoking. In this article we tell you how this device exactly works, and what the different types of vaporizers are.

How does it work?

The plant material is heated to a temperature of approximately 180 degrees Celsius, so that the active ingredients melt in the plant and form an aromatic vapor. This vapor should not contain solid particles (such as tar) and reduces unwanted gases such as nitrogen oxide. The vapor can optionally be filtered and cooled, for example via a water pipe or built-in water or ice element. In that case the vapor is inhaled or stored for later.

The different types of vaporizers

Which one you choose depends on what you’re looking for: do you want to use it for a long period and use the product to the best of its ability? Then it makes more sense to choose a more durable device which is very user friendly. 

Conduction or convection

Vaporizers are classified based on how they heat the material. This can be done by means of conduction or convection. In the case of conduction, the plant material is heated on a metal plate. This isn’t the most popular way, because the material could burn due to the direct contact. With convection there is no direct contact between the plant material and a heating element. Instead of that, hot air flows through the device, causing more active substances to be released. Furthermore, there’s no chance of burning.

Other differences are the material of the vaporizer, and the way in which this material is administered. For example, some companies use a high quality plastic or a silicone pipe.
