With the increasing popularity of ‘vaping’, it is an interesting topic for new research. It is often claimed that vaping, regardless of the better taste and ease of use, causes less damage to the lungs than normal cigarettes. The vaping revolution really did surprise the world. It was invented in China in 2006, but now the e-cigarette has also caused a huge drop in smoking in the various parts of the world. Vaping mostly spread through word-of-mouth advertising for enthusiastic smokers who wanted to quit, but found this difficult. Some experts say E-cigarettes and vaporizers are now the most popular and most successful way to quit smoking.

What are E cigarettes?

E-cigarettes are battery-powered devices that supply the user with vape and nicotine by heating a so called e-liquid. The use of e-cigarettes, commonly known as vaping, has become considerably popular. Smokers are now turning to e-cigarettes as a safer alternative to smoking. Because of their small size, the particles in e-cigarette vapor can reach deep into the lungs and a number of studies research how e-cigarettes affect the cells of the lung airways or deep lungs. Most studies show that vapor from e-cigarettes are less toxic than cigarette smoke, but there is still so much to research to actually conclude that. If your question is: is vaping healthy? The answer would be simply ‘no’. But luckily we’ve got a complete health shop here at Avalon, so if your health is your main concern, go check it out!

E-cigarette vapor and lung function

The results of various studies show that e-cigarette vapor, regardless of the flavor, has minimal influence on lung function. There are, however, cases in which the usage of E-cigarettes have lead to certain mysterious lung diseases. It’s safe to say that not smoking and not vaping at all is the best option there is. Normal cigarettes can significantly inhibit the capacity of the lungs. This is caused by tar in cigarette smoke, which is the result of actually burning stuff. Because e-cigarettes work on the basis of evaporation, and not of combustion, it is often claimed to be a safer option than the smoking alternative. With E-cigarettes and vaporizers, liquids and even dry herbs are heated up til a point where they start to vaporizer, but not burn.

What about the nicotine?

Four out of ten smokers and former smokers mistakenly believe that nicotine causes the most tobacco-related cancer, while research shows that nicotine actually entails a minimal risk of health damage. Although nicotine is the main reason people get addicted to smoking, it is the thousands of other chemicals in cigarette smoke that cause almost all damage. E-cigarette vapor contains no tar or carbon monoxide, two of the most harmful elements in tobacco smoke. It does contain some chemicals that also occur in tobacco smoke, but in much lower quantities.

Are E-cigarettes harmful to the environment?

Exposure to ‘co-smoking’ is harmful, which is why certain countries now have laws that prohibit smoking in private places and workplaces. These laws do not apply to vaping and organizations are usually free to make their own policies regarding the use of e-cigarettes in their buildings, at least in Europe. E-cigarette liquid usually consists of nicotine, propylene glycol and / or glycerine and flavorings. Unlike cigarettes, no side stream vapor is emitted by an e-cigarette, only the exhaled aerosol. To date, no identified health risks have been found from passive vapors to the health of bystanders - but like mentioned, there are cases where E-cigarettes have caused harm to users themselves.

Because vaping is so new, there is hardly any long-term research into the effects of these popular E-cigarettes and vaporizers. It is mainly for this reason that the scientific world remains divided and is still on the fence on whether to call vaping safer than smoking.

Disclaimer: Avalon Magic Plants doesn't suggest vaping is a safer alternative to smoking cigarettes. If you really want to do good for your health, skip both.
