Mulungu 50 grams: shredded bark of Erythrina mulungu

Mulungu is a legume tree at home in the cerrado and caatinga of Brazil. Kew puts its natural range from Bolivia through central Brazil into northern Argentina. It grows some ten to fourteen metres tall, occasionally more, and is impossible to miss in flower: clusters of orange red blooms open at the branch tips and draw hummingbirds. That colour earned the species the nickname coral flower. Watch the naming when you shop around, because Erythrina velutina also passes as mulungu in Brazil.

Inside the bag is shredded bark: fibrous, thread like pieces in yellow brown shades with a mild woody smell. Bark is the part that has long been brewed as an infusion in Brazil, and it is also processed into tinctures. Researchers have described alkaloids in mulungu extracts, among them erythravine and 11-alpha-hydroxy-erythravine. Seeds of Erythrina species are regarded as toxic and have no place in home preparations; this product consists of bark only.

Making an infusion

Reckon on roughly two to three grams of shredded bark per cup. Pour hot water over it, cover the cup and let it steep for ten to fifteen minutes, since bark gives up its content more slowly than leaf does. Strain and drink it unhurried. A splash of lemon juice or a spoonful of honey suits the woody flavour well. Start with a small amount and use the herb in moderation.

Storage and precautions

Keep the bag well sealed in a cool, dry and dark place, ideally in an airtight jar, and out of reach of children. Not suitable for anyone under 18. Do not combine it with alcohol. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding or taking medication, speak to your doctor first. This herb is sold as a botanical product, not as a medicine, and how you use it remains your own responsibility. The same category at Avalon Magic Plants also holds valerian root, wild lettuce, Klip Dagga, Maconha Brava and Sinicuichi. Every order leaves the building in discreet packaging.
