Kokmok: the Sensatonics herbal liqueur in a 30 ml bottle
Sensatonics is a Berlin producer behind a range of organic herbal liqueurs sold as Kräuterkicks, and Kokmok is one of them. The bottle is brown glass with a black screw cap, wearing a yellow and orange label with a fern motif, the line Pflanzenkraft erleben and the description Bio-Kräuterlikör mit Kick. Alongside this 30 ml size the liqueur also comes in 100 ml bottles and in half and three quarter litre formats.
The base is organic alcohol at around 15 per cent, carrying extracts of guarana, kola nut, galangal root and cardamom. Guarana and kola nut are both plants that naturally contain caffeine: guarana is an Amazonian climber whose seeds are used, while kola nuts come from West African trees. Galangal is a relative of ginger and brings a sharp, spicy note, and cardamom supplies the fresh accent that shapes the taste of Kokmok more than anything else. According to the maker the organic guarana comes from a Brazilian fair trade project. Sweetening is done with organic apple juice, agave and passion fruit juice only; there is no refined sugar, no artificial flavouring, no preservative and nothing of animal origin, which makes the liqueur suitable for vegans too.
Serving and storage
Shake the bottle before pouring, since herbal extracts tend to settle. The maker suggests drinking Kokmok neat and well chilled, or as a long drink with ginger ale or fruit juice, taking a measure of about 3 cl as the starting point. Keep the bottle upright somewhere cool and dark, and put it in the fridge once opened. As with any alcoholic drink: not under eighteen, not behind the wheel, not during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and take care if you are on medication.
