Kra Thum Khok 50X: leaf extract of Mitragyna hirsuta
Mitragyna hirsuta is a tree in the madder family Rubiaceae, the same family that gives us coffee and kratom. In Thailand the species goes by the name kra thum khok, and alongside Mitragyna speciosa, Mitragyna diversifolia and Mitragyna rotundifolia it is one of the Mitragyna species commonly seen there. Older product information also names Cambodia and Vietnam as part of its range. The leaf is the usable part of the tree and the raw material for this extract.
What you are buying is a fifty-fold concentrated leaf extract: in this trade, 50X means that roughly 50 grams of leaf has been reduced to 1 gram of extract. A bag holds 3 grams. Research on the leaf has described alkaloids including mitraphylline, isomitraphylline, rhynchophylline, isorhynchophylline and hirsutine, and a more recent study of Thai Mitragyna species also found mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine in Mitragyna hirsuta. What exactly those compounds do is beyond anything we can tell you here.
Preparation
The extract is usually taken as a tea. The common amount is 0.5 gram for one cup: pour hot water over it, leave it to stand for about 30 minutes and then drink it slowly. Experienced users go up to 1 gram. Keep in mind that this is a 50X extract and therefore far more concentrated than loose leaf, so weigh it out rather than guessing by the spoon. Store the bag dry, dark and tightly closed.
