Griffonia simplicifolia is a woody climbing shrub in the legume family, native to West and Central Africa and collected in countries such as Ghana, Ivory Coast and Togo. It reaches around three metres, carries greenish flowers and dark pods, and it is the seed inside those pods that serves as the main natural source of 5-HTP worldwide. Most of the supply is gathered from the wild, because the seeds germinate poorly and large scale cultivation has never really taken off.
What 5-HTP is
5-HTP is a compound the human body produces itself from the amino acid tryptophan. It is an intermediate step in the production of serotonin, a signalling substance in the nervous system. In extracts like this one the 5-HTP does not come from chemical synthesis but from plant seed, which is exactly why Griffonia is harvested commercially.
