San Pedro grow kit: 20 seeds with everything to raise them
The San Pedro is a columnar cactus from the Andes that grows fast for a cactus and gets by on very little water. This set contains everything to start one from seed: 20 seeds, potting soil, coarse sand, drainage gravel, perlite, a grow container with a lid and printed instructions. So you are not sowing into a random pot and hoping, but into a tray that keeps the air humid, which is the hard part with cactus seed.
Raising them is mostly a matter of patience. The first seedlings look like small green balls; the areoles, the spots the spines come from, appear later. Count on about a year before the plants start looking like proper cacti. The seeds are meant for cultivation, not for consumption.

Sowing step by step
- Make 10 small holes in the bottom of the container.
- Fill the container with the gravel first, then with the mixture of soil and sand.
- Lay the seeds on the soil and press them down very lightly with a pencil. They have to stay visible, so do not bury them.
- Spray the container until the soil feels properly moist and close the lid.
- Put the container somewhere warm, next to a radiator or on a heat mat.
Humidity and airing
Seeds usually germinate within one to three weeks, sometimes after only a few days. Keep the soil damp until then. After about eight weeks, make a few holes in the lid, and two weeks later a few more, so the small cacti get used to drier air gradually. Two weeks after that the lid can come off. Keep the soil moist for another two months, then water less and less: let the soil dry out completely before you water again. During the growing season watering about twice a week is enough, with a very light feed if you want.
Light and temperature
Use fluorescent lighting through germination and the first stage of growth; only after that should you move to indirect sunlight. Leave the light on for roughly twelve to sixteen hours a day, which a timer handles for you. Aim for about 25 to 40 degrees during the light period and about 10 to 25 degrees in the dark. That day and night swing does a lot of the work: at a constant temperature most seeds will not come up at all.

These seeds are sold for cultivation.
