Bay Bean 25X, an extract of the beach vine Canavalia maritima
Canavalia maritima, also listed as Canavalia rosea, is a climbing legume that grows on beaches, dunes and cliffs right across the tropics. It tolerates salt and loose sand, which is why you often find it on the strip where little else takes hold. Beach bean, seaside jack-bean and MacKenzie bean are all names for the same plant. In this product the dried leaves have been concentrated twenty-five times, and the pack contains 3 grams.
The traditional side of the story deserves a caveat. The claim you will read everywhere is that the dried leaves are smoked or drunk along the Gulf coast of Mexico, sometimes together with other herbs. That claim mostly traces back to older ethnobotanical writing and has been repeated by sellers ever since, without much independent documentation behind it. What is recorded is that seeds of the plant turned up in graves in Oaxaca, Yucatán and Peru dating from roughly 300 BC to AD 900. L-betonicine has been isolated from the plant, and it is not known to be hallucinogenic. So treat this as a herb with a history rather than a strong preparation.
Making a cup of bay bean tea
- Boil water and let it stand for half a minute.
- Dissolve 1 to 2 grams of extract in a cup of hot water and stir it through.
- Leave it for a few minutes and drink it slowly. A tea herb such as chamomile softens the taste.
- Store the rest dry and dark, out of reach of children.
Using herbs stays your own responsibility. Start with the lower amount and do not combine it with medication.
