Black Leaf ceramic pipe bowl for the Zippsy
The Zippsy follows the tradition of Moroccan smoking gear: a long, narrow stem with a small bowl on the end. That bowl takes the most heat and is therefore the first part to give out. This spare bowl by Black Leaf replaces it. It is turned from white ceramic, with a cupped hollow on top and a short angled section that drops into the stem.
What stands out on this version is the set of four small holes in the base of the bowl rather than one large opening. Spreading the draw that way holds back finely ground material, so you can skip a loose screen and less of it ends up in the stem. Ceramic also picks up no flavour and barely discolours, which makes it easier to live with than a clay or wooden bowl. This one is size S; Black Leaf makes Zippsy bowls in other sizes and materials as well, including stainless steel and titanium.
Fit and use
Measure the opening of your pipe before ordering, just to be sure. The bowls are built for the Zippsy, but they also fit other pipes with an opening of around 7 mm. Seat the bowl in the stem with a light twist and do not force it: ceramic is hard but has no give. Fill the cup loosely and only press the material down if it would otherwise fall out.
Cleaning
Let the bowl cool after use, then tap it empty. Residue comes off with a small brush and, if needed, a little isopropyl alcohol; rinse well with warm water afterwards and let the bowl dry completely. At Avalon Magic Plants the same category holds complete pipes, loose screens and other Black Leaf parts.
