Honest jet flame lighter: a narrow flame that leaves no soot
A jet flame, or torch, works differently from an ordinary lighter. The gas is mixed with air under pressure before it ignites, which produces a short blue flame that shoots out of the burner like a jet. That flame burns hotter than the yellow flame of a disposable lighter and is far harder to blow out. Just as useful around glassware: it releases almost no soot, so glass pipes and vaporizers do not blacken where you hold the flame. The name of this model refers to the Vapman, the Swiss vaporizer that is warmed with a separate flame. Honest is a lighter brand and has been building jet models like this one for years.
Filling and adjusting
The lighter arrives empty, since it cannot be shipped with gas inside. Filling is done with ordinary lighter refill gas, butane or propane, through the valve in the base. Keep the lighter upright and fill in short bursts. Wait a moment after filling, long enough for the gas in the tank to settle back to room temperature, before you light it. The wheel or slider sets the flame height, and there is a setting that keeps the flame burning without holding the button down, which helps when you need both hands. Switch that setting off again after use.
Dust is the main enemy
Jet lighters are sensitive to dust because the opening the gas passes through is narrow. Always put the cap back on when the lighter is not in use and store it somewhere clean and dry. If the flame starts to splutter, or will not light at all while there is gas in the tank, air or dirt in the line is the usual cause: bleed off the remaining gas, blow the burner clean and refill.
Warnings
- Do not expose the lighter to temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius, and do not leave it in the sun or in a hot car for long.
- Keep it out of reach of children.
- Keep the gas tank away from alcohol, acetone and other solvents, as they can crack the tank.
- Never puncture the tank and never throw the lighter into a fire.
