Kanna Full Spectrum extract: the whole profile of Sceletium tortuosum
Kanna is the trade name of Sceletium tortuosum, a low succulent in the ice plant family that grows in the arid regions of South Africa and Namibia. The botanical name comes from the Latin sceletus, skeleton, because the veins stand out so sharply on dried leaves that little more than a frame remains. In Afrikaans the plant is called kougoed, literally chewing stuff, a reference to how the San and the Khoikhoi handled it: the material was bruised, left in the sun for several days to ferment and then dried.
The written record starts in 1685, in the journal of Simon van der Stel, governor of the Cape for the Dutch East India Company. Nearly a century later the Swedish botanist Carl Peter Thunberg described root, stem and leaf being pounded together, twisted up and set aside to ferment. What draws researchers to kanna are its alkaloids, among them mesembrine, mesembrenone, mesembrenol and tortuosamine. That is what the full spectrum label refers to: this extract aims at the plant's complete natural profile rather than one concentrated fraction, as in the stronger crystal extracts from the same range.
Storage and responsible handling
Keep the tube dry, dark and firmly closed, out of reach of children. Extracts are concentrated, so anyone working with them uses small amounts and a precise scale. Do not combine kanna with antidepressants such as SSRIs or MAOIs without talking to your doctor, leave it alone during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and keep it away from driving.
