The plant grows in the dry interior of South Africa, where it has been called kanna or kougoed for centuries. The San and the Khoikhoi bruised the material between stones, let it ferment and then dried it in the sun; what came out was chewed, taken as snuff or brewed as tea. Seventeenth and eighteenth century travel accounts from the Cape describe that method in fair detail. Research into the plant centres on alkaloids such as mesembrine and mesembrenone, which sit in the leaf. An extract is little more than those compounds separated from the rest of the plant material.
That distinction matters if loose leaf is what you know. Kougoed is handled in grams, while an extract is handled in a fraction of that. Nor should you compare strengths by name alone: one supplier prints a ratio, the next an alkaloid percentage, and without an analysis behind them those figures say very little.
