Satya Aastha: a soft floral masala from India

Aastha comes from Satya, the Indian house that made Nag Champa famous. The word means faith or trust in Sanskrit, and the scent follows that idea: gentle, sweet and floral, with a warm vanilla note underneath. If you already burn Nag Champa but want something a little lighter, Aastha is the obvious next box to try. The fragrance is clearly there without pushing everything else out of the room.

The sticks are rolled by hand in the masala tradition. A paste of resins, herbs and aromatic oils is worked around a bamboo stick and then dried slowly, so the scent sits in the stick itself instead of in a layer of perfume sprayed on afterwards. Some people pick up an earthy edge, others mainly the flowers and the vanilla. One box holds 15 grams, around 15 sticks, and a single stick burns for about 30 to 40 minutes.

How to burn incense sticks

Light the tip, let the flame catch for a few seconds and blow it out. The stick should glow quietly and give off a thin thread of smoke. Put it in a proper holder or a small pot of sand, on a surface that can take falling ash. Keep some ventilation in the room and never leave a burning stick unattended. Once the stick has burned down, the scent usually hangs around for hours.
