Hash Maker Shake Me: dry sifting by hand
The Shake Me is a jar that separates resin glands from dry plant material using nothing but movement. You load the upper chamber, screw the lid down and shake. Anything small enough drops through the screen into the collection tray underneath, while the rest stays where it was. No electricity, no solvent, no pressing: it is about as simple as dry sifting gets.
The screen is what you are really buying. It is stainless steel with a 22 micron mesh, which is fine enough that very little leaf comes along and what does fall through is mostly resin. The housing is plastic, closed with a grey screw lid that has a clear window in the top, and the whole thing is the size of a generous jar, so it lives happily in a kitchen drawer. The chamber takes roughly 5 to 8 grams, which makes this a tool for small batches rather than a harvest.
How to use it
- Put the box in the freezer for about 30 minutes. The cold makes the stalks of the resin glands brittle so the heads break off more readily.
- Load thoroughly dried, finely trimmed material into the upper chamber. Anything damp will blind the screen.
- Hand-tighten the lid.
- Shake up and down for three to five minutes, letting the material bounce against the mesh.
- Unscrew the bottom tray and scrape the powder out with a card or a small tool.
Cleaning, and why water is the enemy
Keep the screen dry. To clean it, freeze it for a quarter of an hour, tap it firmly against a hard surface and then work over it with a soft brush. Water does the opposite of what you want and bakes residue into the mesh. Since the box separates into individual parts, you can reach every corner of it. How much you end up with depends far more on how dry and how resinous your material is than on how hard you shake.
