Black Leaf stainless steel pipe bowl for the Zippsy
The Zippsy sits in the tradition of Moroccan smoking gear: a long, narrow stem with a small bowl on the end. That bowl takes the most heat, which makes it the part you usually replace first. This spare bowl by Black Leaf is turned from stainless steel and measures around 17 mm across and 28 mm tall. A short angled plug with a 7 mm opening sits underneath and drops straight into the stem.
Four small holes sit in the base of the cup rather than one wide opening. Finely ground material stays put more easily and less of it travels down the stem, so a loose screen becomes unnecessary. Stainless steel is also far tougher than clay or wood: it will not crack if the bowl hits the floor, it picks up no flavour and it takes a brush without complaint. The BL logo is engraved on the side. This is size S; Black Leaf makes Zippsy bowls in size L as well, and in other materials such as ceramic, titanium and soapstone.
Fit and use
Measure the opening of your pipe before ordering, just to be safe. The bowl is made for the Zippsy, but it also fits other pipes built around a plug of roughly 7 mm. Seat it in the stem with a light twist and never force it. Fill the cup loosely and press the material down only if it would otherwise fall out. Metal carries heat well, so give the bowl a moment before you pick it up with bare fingers.
Cleaning
Let the bowl cool, then tap it empty. Residue brushes out easily, and anything stubborn can soak in a little isopropyl alcohol; rinse well with warm water afterwards and let everything dry. The same category at Avalon Magic Plants holds complete pipes, loose screens and the ceramic Zippsy bowl by Black Leaf.
