Thai White Kratom: white leaf of Mitragyna speciosa, finely milled
There is a short chain behind a bag of kratom powder. In Southeast Asia the leaf of Mitragyna speciosa is picked from the tree by hand, dried and then milled. The tree is a relative of the coffee plant and can reach some fifteen metres in the wild; what you order is the ground leaf and nothing else. The word Thai belongs to that chain: it is a trade name that goes back to Thai leaf and is now applied to material from neighbouring countries as well.
White is the third term on the label and deserves a note, because it says nothing about the shade of the powder. Traders sort kratom by the colour of the central vein of the leaf and by how that leaf was handled after harvest. White stands for leaf picked younger and then dried away from harsh sunlight, green comes from half grown leaf, and red is dried for longer or given a fermentation step. What this system does not do is guarantee a fixed composition. Research on Mitragyna speciosa shows that drying time and drying temperature shift the alkaloid profile considerably, so two bags carrying the same label from different harvests can differ. Read the colour name as a description of origin and handling.

Weights run from 25 grams to 10 kilos: a small bag to put Thai White beside another type, 100 or 500 grams if you order more often, and 1, 5 or 10 kilos for high volume. Store the powder dry, dark and airtight, preferably in its original bag or a jar that seals well, since moisture makes ground leaf clump. Keep it away from children, avoid kratom during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and speak to your doctor if you take medication. Sales are to adults of eighteen and over.
