Thai Green Kratom: green ground leaf of Mitragyna speciosa
Kratom is the regional name for the leaf of Mitragyna speciosa, a tree from the forests of Southeast Asia. The species sits in the madder family, which also gives us the coffee plant, and in the wild it reaches something like fifteen metres. Leaf is picked, dried and milled into a fine powder, and that powder is what you order here. Thai points to Thai leaf in trade usage, although the label now travels with leaf sourced in Indonesia and Malaysia as well, much as it did with Maeng Da.
The word green says little about the colour of the powder, since nearly every type comes out green. It refers to the central vein of the leaf and to what happens to that leaf after harvest. Green material is usually picked at a half grown stage and then dried indoors under limited light, so it oxidises less far than red leaf. Red leaf goes through a longer drying stage or a fermentation step, while white is picked younger. Colour names therefore work as an indication of origin and handling rather than a precise measure: kratom is a natural product, and two harvests never match each other exactly in smell, shade or make up.
