What is coca tea and why should you drink it?

In the world of natural food, you're often advised to drink herbal tea. We all know rooibos, nettle or camomile. But are you already familiar with coca tea? In this blog we'll tell you more about it.

The coca plant originates from Peru and only grows at high altitudes in the Andes mountains. The leaves are used to make a special tea. It's an ancient tea that the Incas already drank. They considered it a magic drink. With our modern knowledge, we drink it for its traditional properties. The Incas used the whole leaves, often fresh, so the potency was of course stronger than the dried leaves we use today. Still, coca tea can support your body in a positive way, using the same traditional knowledge the Incas had centuries ago.

Benefits

Coca tea is a tasty and healthy tea. It's also a good sports drink, because in addition to being thirst-quenching and refreshing, it can also support your endurance. The tea gives you more energy and has a boosting effect. Combined with a healthy diet, it can work positively on your weight. The tea has a stimulating effect but is caffeine-free. Coca tea contains vitamins such as A, B2, B6, C and E. It also contains different alkaloids to which traditional health effects are attributed.

What do you need?

Prepare coca tea as follows: take 1 teaspoon of dried coca leaves (powder). Heat cold water in a pot, but don't let it boil. Heat until bubbles form at the bottom, similar to preparing Asian green tea where hot water brings out the flavour best. Place the teaspoon of dried coca leaves in a tea infuser and put it in the pot of water. Allow the coca leaves to steep for 20 minutes for a dark brew, or 10 minutes for a light amber brew. Pour the coca tea into a mug. If it's too strong, simply add more water. Finish with a teaspoon of honey and a dash of lemon juice, stir and enjoy!
