Classic Rasta pipe with lid

This is the model that has been sitting in headshop display cases for decades: a straight metal tube with a bowl on the side and a mouthpiece at the far end. The middle section is translucent in red, yellow and green, which is where the name comes from. On top of the bowl sits a small lid with an opening in it, turning on the same thread so it does not get lost.

The real advantage of the design is in those threads. Bowl, middle section and mouthpiece unscrew in a couple of seconds, giving you access to every part when it is time to clean. On a one-piece pipe that never really works, and residue is exactly what ruins the taste. A brush or a bit of isopropyl alcohol and the pipe is as good as new.

Care and handling

Let the pipe cool down before you take it apart, since metal holds heat for a while. Then unscrew the sections, tap out what is left and rinse with hot water. When you reassemble it, tighten everything by hand rather than by force so the threads keep running smoothly. The compact size means the pipe disappears into a pocket or a small case, and the lid keeps the bowl closed while you carry it.
