VaporGenie Stainless Coil: vaporising with nothing but a lighter

The Stainless Coil is the metal version of the VaporGenie. Its body consists of tightly wound stainless steel wire, five coils compressed so that no air leaks past them. The shape gives it away at once: a stubby tube with a waist in the middle, which is where the two halves twist apart. Batteries, charging cables and gas cartridges play no part. A plain lighter does the job, so the pipe travels in a coat pocket without any thought about battery life.

The real work is done by the ceramic flame filter, the part VaporGenie holds a patent on. Made of silicon carbide and containing no metal, it neither burns through nor needs replacing. While you hold the flame under it, that heat mixes with cool air drawn through the pipe. The stream reaching your herb therefore sits somewhere around 135 to 175 degrees Celsius: warm enough for the plant compounds to evaporate, below the point where material starts to burn. How hard you pull decides where in that range you land, which makes your breath the temperature dial. Behind the filter sits a mesh screen of 316 stainless steel, the most inert of the stainless alloys.

Using the Stainless Coil

  1. Take hold of both ends and twist off the half holding the filter to expose the bowl.
  2. Pack the bowl loosely with ground material. Pressing it down hard chokes the airflow.
  3. Twist the two halves back together.
  4. Hold the flame above the filter while inhaling slowly and steadily. Keep the flame off the ceramic itself, since direct contact clogs the filter with soot.

Cleaning and upkeep

The pipe disassembles completely. Clean the bowl half with a pipe cleaner or a cleaning liquid, go over the exterior with a stainless brush and soak the filter half in warm soapy water. The mesh screen is a wear part: swap it out once it clogs up. At Avalon Magic Plants you will also find the classic wooden VaporGenie, the VaporGenie Glass Sherlock and the hand-operated Lady Lifter, along with grinders such as the wooden classic for preparing your material first.
