Growkit Jupiter: the broad capped kit in the Space Shrooms range
The Growkit Jupiter is a complete kit for growing mushrooms at home without inoculating or sterilising anything yourself. The box holds a colonised inner tray with substrate, a cover with ventilation holes and a cloth you use to control humidity. Because the mycelium was applied in a laboratory and has already taken over the tray, your part of the job starts at the misting stage.
Within the range, Jupiter takes its name from the largest planet and is described by the grower as the kit that produces sturdy fruiting bodies with wide caps. Like every other Space Shroom, this variety is based on Psilocybe cubensis. The whole line was developed by the brand's resident mycologist, a grower in his seventies with more than fifty years behind him, who spent years crossing different types into a cluster race that comes through quickly and evenly.
Starting the kit
- Take the lid off the transparent inner tray and mist the substrate with water.
- Spray once or twice against the inside of the cover, then put the cover back without the inner lid.
- Lay the supplied cloth over the holes of the kit and leave only the top hole uncovered.
- Once caps appear, stop watering and peel the cloth back a little further each day.
Keep the temperature between 18 and 30 degrees Celsius, with roughly 23 as the comfortable middle. Place the kit somewhere bright but out of direct sunlight. If you no longer see moisture under the cover, mist the inside of the cover again, never the substrate or the mushrooms themselves.
Harvesting and storage
Wash your hands thoroughly before reaching into the kit. Hold each mushroom at the base and twist it out gently, touching the white mycelium as little as possible. Do not dig around with your fingers, as that is the quickest way to contaminate the next flush; use sterilised tweezers for anything stuck along the sides. Keep the harvest cool and dark, ideally in the fridge, and dry it if you want to keep it considerably longer. Then repeat the same steps for the second and third flush.
