Growkit Mercury: built around speed
Of all the Space Shrooms kits, Mercury is the one put together with a short turnaround in mind. At a room temperature of about 23 degrees Celsius the first flush tends to arrive after some ten days. The name comes from the planet orbiting closest to the sun, which suits a kit that does not sit still for long.
About the Space Shrooms range
The series was developed by the brand's resident mycologist, a grower in his seventies with over fifty years of practice behind him. He spent years crossing different types until he had a cluster race that, in his words, is easy to grow and comes through evenly. Every kit in the range, Mercury included, is based on Psilocybe cubensis and ships on a substrate fully colonised in the lab.
Growing in four steps
- Remove the lid of the transparent inner tray and mist water over the substrate.
- Spray once or twice against the inside of the cover and place it back on the kit.
- Lay the supplied cloth over the ventilation holes and keep only the top hole open.
- As soon as the first caps show, stop spraying and pull the cloth back a bit further each day until every hole is clear.
Mushrooms are mostly water, so moisture is the main thing you manage during the fruiting stage. If you can no longer see moisture on the inside of the cover, mist that cover again rather than the substrate or the mushrooms themselves. A bright spot out of direct sunlight works best.
After the harvest
Wash your hands thoroughly, take each mushroom by the base and twist it loose. Leave the white mycelium alone; digging with your fingers is the fastest way to ruin the next flush. Keep the harvest cool and dark, ideally in the fridge, or dry it if you want to store it longer. Then repeat the steps for the second and third flush.
