Hyoscyamus niger: black henbane, the classic witching herb
Black henbane is native to Eurasia and now turns up across much of the world, usually on disturbed ground and along roadsides. The plant reaches roughly 40 to 100 cm, carries large hairy leaves with toothed edges and gives off a smell most people describe as distinctly unpleasant. Its flowers are the giveaway: ochre-yellow petals laced with a network of purple-brown veins around a dark throat. Once flowering is over, a capsule forms that opens with a small lid and releases a mass of tiny brown seeds.
Few plants carry this much history. Henbane belongs to the nightshade family, which puts it in the company of belladonna, datura and mandrake, all of them known for tropane alkaloids such as hyoscyamine and scopolamine. That reputation runs through centuries of European folklore: witches' ointments, medieval poisonings, page after page in old herbals. Seeds recovered from a Viking grave even fed speculation about berserkers. These days henbane is mainly a plant for collectors, botanical gardens and anyone drawn to the historical flora of Europe.
Sowing henbane
- Give the seeds a cold period of about two weeks in the fridge, since dormancy is strong and chilling helps break it.
- Sow on moist, free-draining soil and press the seeds in gently, with a thin covering at most.
- Keep them warm and slightly damp; germination can be uneven and may take a while.
- Plant out the strongest seedlings in a sunny spot and give them room to spread.
Wear gloves when handling the plant or its seeds, wash your hands afterwards and keep everything away from children and pets. These seeds are sold for study and cultivation, not for consumption. Do check whether the plant may be grown freely where you live, as it is listed as a noxious weed in parts of North America.
