Bomb pipe chrome: a metal pipe with a spiral channel

The Bomb pipe takes its name from its shape: a smooth chrome shell that looks like a small aerial bomb, finished with a tapered mouthpiece at one end. It is the kind of pipe that survives being dropped, and it disappears into a jacket pocket or bag without any fuss.

The interesting part sits on the inside. Unscrew the pipe and you are holding four pieces: the bowl cap with three holes, the outer shell, a screw-shaped helix and the mouthpiece. That helix fills the cavity of the shell and forces the smoke to spiral around it instead of shooting straight through. Within the same short length the smoke therefore travels a good deal further, which gives it more time to cool before it reaches you. The three holes in the bowl cap do the job of a screen, so there is no need to drop in a loose gauze.

Use and upkeep

Fill the bowl loosely and only press the material down if it would otherwise fall out. Metal carries heat, so hold the pipe by its far end while lighting and let it rest between draws. The fact that it comes apart pays off most at cleaning time: the helix collects the bulk of the residue over time, and that is exactly the part you can lift out. Soak the pieces for half an hour in isopropyl alcohol or hot water with a little dish soap, brush them, rinse thoroughly and let everything dry before you screw the pipe back together.
