Pollen press L: the largest size in the range
The press is a straight stainless steel cylinder with a knurled screw ring at the top, a threaded rod with a T-handle running through it, and a second screw ring at the bottom. Turn the handle and the rod travels down into the tube, compressing whatever lies inside into a solid disc. Internally this L version measures 30 mm across and 93 mm long, against 25 by 72 mm for the M and 20 by 51 mm for the S, so a single pressing holds more.
What usually goes in is pollen: the fine powder that collects in the bottom chamber of a grinder or in a sieve box. Loose, that powder sticks to everything and scatters; pressed into a disc it is easier to store, weigh and carry. Other dry, fine plant material compacts the same way. There is no mechanism or electronics inside, just the screw thread doing the work, which is also the part to treat with care.
Using the press
- Unscrew the top ring with the T-handle and lift it out of the tube.
- Fill the tube with your material, leaving a few millimetres of room.
- Put the handle back and turn it by hand until you feel clear resistance.
- Leave the press under pressure for a while; the longer it sits, the firmer the disc.
- Back the handle off a few turns, unscrew the bottom ring and push the disc out.
Upkeep
Do not force the handle once it stops giving, because the thread is the most vulnerable part. Take the press apart after use and clean it with warm water and a little washing up liquid, then dry every part thoroughly before reassembling. If your material sticks to the rod, place a small round of baking paper above and below the filling.
