Black Leaf Crown: four parts, screen and pollen chamber
The Crown takes its name from its shape. The rim of the lid and of the grinding chamber runs out into broad, bevelled points, which gives the side profile the look of a crown. Those points are not only decoration: they give you something to hold on to while you turn, even one-handed. The lid carries the engraved Black Leaf crown emblem. The whole thing is aluminium, 55 millimetres across and 40 millimetres tall, so it fills a palm without feeling heavy.
Four parts means more happens than grinding alone. The lid with the teeth sits on top, then the grinding chamber with its drop holes, then a fine metal screen, and at the very bottom the closed pollen chamber. The finest material falls through the screen and gathers there; the scraper that comes in the box lifts it out without spilling. The teeth are cut in a trapezoid shape, so they catch material instead of pressing it flat. A nylon ring between the lid and the grinding chamber keeps metal off metal and keeps the turn light, while a magnet holds the lid in place when the grinder travels loose in a bag. The velvet pouch is there for storage and keeps the anodised finish free of scratches.
How to use it
- Take off the lid and spread your herbs loosely between the teeth, not past the rim.
- Put the lid back and turn it back and forth until you no longer feel resistance.
- Unscrew the grinding chamber; the ground material is waiting on the screen.
- Empty the pollen chamber now and then with the scraper.
Maintenance
Run a small brush along the teeth, the thread and the screen at regular intervals. Resin build-up makes the grinder turn heavily and clogs the screen. Leave the nylon ring in place while you clean, and keep sharp tools away from the anodised finish; a dry brush does the job.
