Light wood grinder leaf: pale wood with a carved lid

The colour is the first thing you notice about this grinder. The wood is pale and honey toned, and the grain runs differently through every piece, so no two are quite alike. The lid carries a leaf cut in relief, framed by rows of small circles that fill the rim. Towards the bottom the body widens slightly, which gives your fingers something to hold while you twist. At roughly 35 millimetres across this is one of the smaller models: it disappears into a trouser or jacket pocket without drawing attention.

The grinder comes apart in two halves. The lower half holds metal pins arranged in a circle around the centre, while the inside of the lid is smooth and presses the herbs between them as you turn. Pins behave differently from the sharp teeth of an aluminium grinder: they pull the material apart rather than slicing it finely, which keeps the result a little fluffier. There is no screen or pollen chamber, as is the case with any two part model. Wood also feels different in the hand, lighter and far less cold than metal.

How to use it

1. Lift off the lid and spread your herbs loosely between the pins without pressing them down.
2. Put the lid back on and twist the two halves back and forth a few times.
3. Take the lid off again and tap the contents gently into your hand or onto a small dish.

Care: keep it dry

Never rinse a wooden grinder and never let it soak, because wood swells and can start to bind afterwards. Wipe the inside clean and dry, and use a soft brush for the residue between the pins and in the carved grooves of the lid, since that is exactly where dust settles.
