Pollen press S: small enough for a coat pocket

This S is the smallest version of the stainless steel pollen press. It is built like the bigger sizes: a straight tube with a knurled screw ring and a threaded rod with T-handle at the top, and a ring at the bottom that unscrews so the pressed disc can be pushed out from below. Inside you get 20 mm across and 51 mm of length, against 25 by 72 mm for the M and 30 by 93 mm for the L. The difference lies in how much goes in at once rather than in how hard you can press, because the pressing comes from the thread and that works the same way in every size.

For small amounts the short tube is the advantage. A few tenths of a gram of pollen out of a grinder's bottom chamber already fills the S usefully, while in a wider tube that little powder spreads as a thin film across the base and never turns into a tidy disc. Being compact and solid, the press travels in a pouch or a coat pocket without worry, and stainless steel will not draw moisture.

Pressing a disc

1. Unscrew the top ring with the T-handle and take it out of the tube.
2. Fill the tube and leave a few millimetres of room, or the rod cannot travel far enough.
3. Turn the handle down by hand until you feel resistance and let it sit under pressure for a while.
4. Back the handle off, unscrew the bottom ring and push the disc out.

Upkeep

The thread is the only part that can really be damaged, so do not push on once the handle refuses to turn. Unscrew the press after use, clean the parts in warm water with a little washing up liquid and dry them before closing it up again. Sticky material releases more easily if you put a small round of baking parchment above and below the filling.
