St John's wort 20%: alkaloid extract in a 10 ml bottle
Alkaloid extracts are also known as TPA extracts, short for Total Purified Alkaloids. The alkaloids are isolated from the herb by extraction and then added to a base of ethanol (alcohol) and water. Nothing else goes in: no sugar, no flavouring, no plant residue. The percentage on the label, 20% in this case, refers to the share of alkaloids in the extract.
The herb behind it is Hypericum perforatum. It is a perennial with five-petalled yellow flowers that open from around the end of June, close to St John's day on 24 June, which is where the English name comes from. Hold a leaf up to the light and you see tiny translucent glands that look like pinpricks; that appearance gave the species its name perforatum. The plant has had a place in European herbals for centuries and used to be hung above doorways, and the genus name Hypericum is usually traced to the Greek hyper and eikon, above the picture.

The bottle
You receive a white 10 ml bottle with a wood-look cap holding a pipette, so the extract can be measured out drop by drop. The label carries the botanical name and the line 10 ML, 200+ DROPS. Keep the bottle upright, cool and dark, and out of reach of children. It contains alcohol, so close the cap firmly after use.
Points to note
This extract is meant for adults of 18 and over and not for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding. If you take medication, or hesitate for any other reason, talk to your doctor first. Avalon Magic Plants makes no statements about medicinal effects: this is not a medicine and it replaces no treatment.
Avalon Magic Plants stocks more extracts from the same TPA range, among them passionflower 20%, valerian with gaba, kanna, blue lotus, damiana and wild lettuce. Everything leaves discreetly packed.
