Empty capsules size 0: the middle of the range
Of the four sizes sold separately here, size 0 is where most people end up. One capsule takes about 0.68 millilitres, which for an average herbal powder means around 500 milligrams. That is enough to fit a normal serving into one or two capsules while the capsule itself stays comfortable to swallow. A box holds one hundred of them, clear and in two parts: a body with a cap that slides over it.
The four sizes side by side
- Size 1: about 0.5 ml, some 400 mg. The smallest and the easiest to swallow.
- Size 0: about 0.68 ml, some 500 mg. The size on this page.
- Size 00: about 0.9 ml, some 650 mg. Fewer capsules needed per serving.
- Size 000: about 1.37 ml, some 1000 mg. The largest, and noticeable going down.
Those milligram figures are guides. What fits by weight depends on your powder: a fluffy leaf powder will not reach 500 milligrams, while a finely milled extract goes past it. If you want to know exactly, weigh one filled capsule and work from that number.
Filling is quicker with a machine
A spoon works, but anything beyond a handful of capsules turns into tedious work. Storage
Gelatin comes from animal sources, so these capsules do not fit a plant-based diet. They also react to moisture: left in a damp kitchen or bathroom they go soft and tacky. A sealed jar in a dry, dark spot is enough, out of reach of children.
