Empty capsules size 1: the smallest in the range
Size 1 is the most compact capsule sold here on its own. These are two-piece gelatin capsules: a narrow body with a cap that slides over it. They are clear, so the contents stay visible. A box contains one hundred, enough to keep you going for a few weeks or to try out several blends.
Each capsule takes about half a millilitre. For most herbal powders that comes out at roughly 400 milligrams. Anyone who struggles with large capsules will find these go down far more easily, and for concentrated extracts that need only a small amount the smaller size is an advantage. Need a gram or more per serving and you are already at three capsules, which is where size 0 or 00 becomes the more sensible choice.
What actually fits inside
The volume is fixed, the weight is not. A fluffy leaf powder weighs less than a fine, dense extract at the same volume, so treat 400 milligrams as a guide rather than a promise. Weigh your powder if you want to know the amount per capsule, instead of counting capsules. Grind it finely first: coarse pieces leave air pockets and less goes in than you would expect.
Filling and storage
A spoon will do the job, but it is fiddly. The size 1 Capsule Machine sets 24 of them in a holder and closes them in one press, with a spread card and tamper included. Gelatin comes from animal sources, so these capsules are not suitable if you eat plant-based. Keep them dry and away from steam, in a sealed jar for instance. Damp gelatin turns soft and tacky.
