Empty capsules size 000: the largest in the range
Size 000 is the roomiest capsule sold here. Its capacity sits around 1.37 millilitres, which for an average herbal powder works out at roughly a gram. That saves work when you need a lot of powder per serving: what takes two capsules in size 00 often fits into one here. You get one hundred clear gelatin capsules, each made up of a body and a cap.
To be fair about it, 000 is a sizeable capsule. Not everyone swallows one comfortably, certainly not dry. If you are in doubt, two size 00 or size 0 capsules make for an easier ride. Where size 000 really pays off is with light, bulky powders. Finely ground leaf takes up a lot of room and weighs little, and then the capsule volume is the limit rather than the weight.
Volume matters more here than weight
The 1.37 millilitres is fixed, the thousand milligrams is not. A light leaf powder stays well below that figure, while a dense, finely milled extract goes past it. So count in grams rather than in capsules: fill one, weigh it, and use that number for the rest of your batch. Grind your herbs finely first, because coarse pieces leave air pockets and less goes in than you would expect.
Filling and storage
Filling by hand is extra fiddly at this length. A size 000 Capsule Machine is available that sets 24 bottom halves in a holder, so you can spread the powder in one go with the card, pack it down with the tamper and close everything with the lid. Gelatin comes from animal sources and is therefore not suitable on a plant-based diet. Keep the capsules dry and dark in a sealed jar, out of reach of children; damp gelatin turns soft and tacky.
At Avalon Magic Plants you will also find empty capsules in sizes 1, 0 and 00, the matching Capsule Machines, grinders and precision scales. Your order is shipped discreetly packed.
