Satya Mystic Yoga: light floral incense from India
Mystic Yoga belongs to the newer range from Satya, the brand that became known worldwide through Nag Champa. The sticks are still made the traditional way: a paste of resin, sandalwood powder, herbs and fragrance oil is rolled around a bamboo stick by hand and then dried slowly. Because of this masala method the scent comes from the blend itself rather than from a coat of perfume sprayed on afterwards. You notice it while the stick burns, since the fragrance stays much the same from start to finish.
The scent is light and floral, carrying the soft sweetness you know from Nag Champa with a herbal, slightly fresher edge over the top. That is why Mystic Yoga is so often burned during yoga and meditation, although it works just as well on an ordinary weekday evening in the living room. One box holds 15 grams, which comes down to roughly 12 to 15 sticks. A stick burns for about 20 to 30 minutes and the scent lingers for hours afterwards. Since every stick is rolled by hand, thickness varies a little from stick to stick, which is simply part of the craft.
How to burn incense sticks
Light the tip, let the flame catch for a few seconds and then blow it out. The stick keeps glowing and releases a thin ribbon of smoke. Place it in an incense holder or a small pot of sand, on a surface that can handle falling ash. Keep the room slightly ventilated and never leave a burning stick unattended.
