Benzoin - Aztec incense

Benzoin incense by Banjara, from the Aztec series

These sticks are part of the Banjara Ethno-Tribal Smudge Incense line, in the Aztec range. They are rolled by hand and contain benzoin resin, the gum that seeps from the bark of Styrax trees. Each box holds 15 grams.

What does benzoin smell like?

Round and warm, not sharp or spicy. You pick up notes of vanilla and balsam. The scent stays around for hours, yet never dominates the room. That is why many incense blends use benzoin as a base: it softens other scents. People like to burn it while reading, during meditation or to freshen up a room after cooking. For something with more bite, try the Cinnamon from the same Aztec series.

How to burn a stick

• Light the tip and blow out the flame after a few seconds.

• Place the stick in a heat-resistant holder, like the Ganesh incense holder, or in a small dish of sand.

• Never leave a burning stick unattended, and keep curtains, paper and children well clear of it.

• Open a window slightly, especially in a small room.

Frequently asked questions

How many sticks are in a box?
Banjara packs by weight: 15 grams. The number of sticks can vary by a few per box.

Is this the same as smudging with sage?
No. Smudging usually means a bundle of sage or a piece of palo santo. These are regular incense sticks that you let burn down in a holder.
