Mascotte Brown Combi: 34 brown slim papers plus 34 tips
This is the combi version of the brown Mascotte range. The paper is the same unbleached sheet you get in the plain Brown Slim Size booklet, with a strip of cardboard tips added to the same sleeve, so one booklet covers both. Each sheet measures 108 by 44 millimetres, which Mascotte calls slim size, and at around 14 grams per square metre it is an extra thin paper that burns down slowly.
Unbleached here means the bleaching step is skipped, so the paper stays chlorine free and keeps the brown colour of the fibre itself. The glue line is natural acacia gum. Mascotte states that its papers are vegan and gluten free and that the packaging is FSC certified. Instead of a tuck flap, the cardboard sleeve closes with a magnet, which keeps the booklet shut when it is loose in a pocket or a bag. The slogan on the pack, "Experts never compromise", has been there for years; Mascotte is a Dutch brand that has been making rolling paper since the last century.
What the tips add
The 34 tips are plain cardboard and you roll them into a filter yourself. A tip keeps loose bits out of the draw, holds the open end in shape so it does not collapse, and keeps the airflow going down to the last stretch. Because this paper is slim, a narrow tip is all you need, and there is no reason to wrap extra paper around the filter.
Slim or king size?
Slim size is as long as king size but noticeably narrower at 44 millimetres. The paper goes about once around your filling and nothing is left over to tear off. If you would rather have paper to spare, for rolling inside out or for a bigger filling, the Brown King Size from the same range makes more sense. The paper itself is identical.
Storage
Keep the booklet dry and flat. Damp paper tears sooner and the gum line stops holding properly. The magnetic flap helps here, though a booklet that has spent a night in a wet coat pocket stays awkward to roll.
