Smoking Green King Size: hemp paper with no trees felled
For the green booklets Smoking works with hemp rather than wood pulp. The maker states the hemp is grown without pesticides or herbicides and prints the TREE FREE seal on the pack: no tree comes down for this paper. Hemp suits the job because the plant reaches full growth in a single season and yields long, strong fibres, where trees need decades. Smoking itself is a Miquel y Costas brand from Capellades near Barcelona and has been around since 1924.
The format is the familiar king size of 108 by 44 millimetres and the paper weighs about 13 grams per square metre, so you give up nothing in thinness compared with the gold version. The gum line is 100 percent natural vegetable gum, without colourings or other additives. Every leaf carries the Smoking watermark and the paper burns along slowly.
How hemp paper handles
Hemp sheets have a slightly rougher texture than bleached wood pulp, which often gives them a bit more grip between your fingers and makes rolling easier when your hands are dry. The colour looks more natural, a shade off white. Beyond that you roll it like any other king size: fill, shape, wet the gum line lightly and press it shut.
Storage and refills
Keep the booklet dry and flat; damp paper tears sooner and the gum grips less well. Filter tips are not included in the booklet and are sold separately in the same category.
