Smoking Master Silver King Size: the narrow leaf for practised rollers
Master is the line Smoking aims at experienced rollers. The silver booklets run the same length as the rest of the king size family, 108 millimetres, but at 37 millimetres across they sit well under the gold and green at 44 and the blue at 52. The maker calls this paper ultrafine and one of the lightest on the market; the weight lands around 13 grams per square metre. Smoking is a Miquel y Costas brand from Capellades near Barcelona and dates back to 1924.
Less width literally means less paper per roll. Anyone paying attention to taste picks that on purpose: the less paper burns along, the less of it you notice. The paper is FSC certified, sourced according to the maker from plantations that protect biodiversity, and carries the Smoking watermark. The gum line is 100 percent natural vegetable gum, with no colourings or other additives.
Rolling a narrow leaf
At 37 millimetres there is little margin, so fill a touch less than you are used to and roll it tight; there is no surplus paper here to hide a wobbly start. If you would rather have room to work, the gold king size at 44 millimetres makes more sense. A filter tip earns its place at this width, keeping the end open and the roll in shape; tips are not included in the booklet and are sold separately.
Storage
A booklet counts 33 leaves. Keep it flat and dry, because ultrafine paper reacts to damp faster than heavier stock and then tears as you pull a leaf out.
