Smoking Gold King Size: ultrathin in the standard width
The gold booklets are Smoking's calling card. The brand comes out of Spain and belongs to paper maker Miquel y Costas; the Smoking name has been registered since 1924. This king size measures 108 by 44 millimetres, the size most people mean when they say long papers, a little narrower than the blue king size at 52 millimetres and considerably roomier than the Master Silver at 37.
The stock sits around 13 grams per square metre, which puts it in ultrathin territory. Thin paper adds less flavour of its own and burns along more slowly, so the roll works its way down evenly. Every leaf carries the Smoking watermark, visible when you hold it up to the light; that mark is not decoration, it shows the paper really came out of this mill. The paper is FSC certified.
Why 44 millimetres rolls well
At this width a normal filling leaves you just enough paper to close the roll neatly, without a double layer that burns along for nothing. That makes the gold king size the safe pick when you are unsure: wide enough to fill generously, narrow enough that you are not trimming surplus. If you deliberately want less paper in the mix, the Master Silver is the narrow option; if you want room for inside out rolling, take the blue.
Keeping the booklet
A booklet counts 33 leaves and stays flat, so it travels fine in a tobacco pouch. Keep it dry: damp weakens thin paper and takes the grip out of the gum line. Filter tips are not included in the booklet and are sold separately.
