Salvia divinorum comes in eight strengths, from dried leaves containing roughly 2.5 mg of salvinorin A per gram to 80x extract at 288 mg per gram. That is a 115-fold difference. Yet many buyers pick a strength based on price or guesswork, without knowing what those numbers mean for the actual experience. Below, we compare every extract level by salvinorin A content, dosage and intensity, so you can choose a strength that matches your experience level.
How the X-factor works
The number before the X represents the ratio of raw leaf to finished product. A 10x extract is made by concentrating the salvinorin A from ten grams of leaf into one gram of extract. In theory, 10x extract therefore contains ten times as much active compound as the same weight of unprocessed leaf.
The baseline is the average salvinorin A content of dried Salvia divinorum leaves: approximately 2.5 mg per gram. In practice, this figure varies between 1 and 4 mg/g depending on the harvest, the season and the drying method. Extracts are standardised against the average, which makes the values listed below reliable reference points.
The full range breaks down as follows:
- Leaves: ~2.5 mg/g
- 5x: ~12.5 mg/g
- 10x: ~25 mg/g
- 15x: ~37.5 mg/g
- 20x: ~50 mg/g
- 30x: ~75 mg/g
- 40x: ~100 mg/g
- 80x: ~288 mg/g
That last number stands out. A strictly linear calculation would put 80x at 200 mg/g. The actual 288 mg/g results from an additional purification step that is not needed at lower concentrations.
Leaves: the mildest option
Dried Salvia divinorum leaves contain an average of 2.5 mg of salvinorin A per gram. At Avalon Magic Plants, we sell them in 6-gram packs, enough for several sessions.
The traditional method of the Mazatec people in the Sierra Madre was chewing. Fresh or rehydrated leaves are held in the mouth so that salvinorin A is absorbed through the oral mucosa. The onset takes 10 to 15 minutes, the peak arrives around 30 minutes in, and the effects fade within an hour. Between 2 and 10 grams of dried leaf is needed for a noticeable effect, because mucosal absorption is less efficient than pulmonary absorption.
Smoking is the more common modern approach. It requires 200 to 800 mg of leaf material, depending on the desired intensity. Salvinorin A only vaporises above 240 °C, so a regular lighter is not sufficient. A torch lighter is needed to combust the material properly. The effect sets in within seconds, peaks at roughly two minutes and is over in 20 to 30 minutes.
For anyone trying salvia for the first time, leaves are a natural starting point. The low concentration gives room to get familiar with the characteristic effects without overwhelming intensity. Our article on taking salvia for the first time covers what to expect in more detail.
5x and 10x: the middle ground
The 5x extract contains approximately 12.5 mg of salvinorin A per gram; the 10x extract holds 25 mg per gram. Both are sold in 1-gram packs.
When smoking 5x extract, 40 to 160 mg of material is enough for a light to strong effect. That is considerably less than the 200 to 800 mg needed with plain leaf, which makes it easier in practice to weigh an accurate dose. For 10x extract, the range drops to 20 to 80 mg.
Many experienced users point to 5x as the level where the full salvia experience first becomes readily accessible: strong visual distortions, the characteristic feeling of gravity shifting, and occasionally brief dissociative episodes. At 10x, these effects become more intense and arrive faster. A sober sitter is strongly recommended from 10x upward, since awareness of one's surroundings can temporarily vanish entirely.
The middle range is popular with people who already know the subtlety of plain leaves and want to go further, without needing the extreme intensity of the higher concentrations.
15x, 20x and 30x: the stronger range
At 15x (37.5 mg/g), 20x (50 mg/g) and 30x (75 mg/g), the required dose per session drops further. For 20x extract, 10 to 40 mg of material is enough for a full effect. The 30x extract is sold in 0.5-gram packs instead of 1 gram, reflecting its higher concentration.
The difference from the middle range is not only a matter of intensity. From 15x onward, users more frequently report full dissociation: a sensation that the body disappears, that the environment merges with internal imagery, or that time has stopped. The margin between "strong effect" and "overwhelming" becomes narrower here. An accidentally large dose of 20x or 30x can produce an experience comparable to a full dose of 40x.
Precise weighing at this level is not optional. A difference of 10 mg in 20x extract equals the gap between a mild session and a heavy one. A milligram-precision scale is a requirement, not a luxury.
40x and 80x: the highest concentrations
The 40x extract (100 mg of salvinorin A per gram) and the 80x extract (288 mg/g) are the strongest products in the Salvia divinorum range. Both are sold in 0.5-gram packs.
With 40x, 5 to 20 mg of material is enough for a full experience. That is roughly the size of a grain of rice. With 80x, the figure drops to 2 to 7 mg. The threshold dose for salvinorin A, the minimum at which an effect becomes noticeable, sits around 200 micrograms (0.2 mg). In 80x extract, that threshold is reached with less than 1 mg of material.
These concentrations are intended exclusively for very experienced users who already know how their body and mind respond to salvinorin A. Effects at this level include complete ego dissolution, total loss of awareness of the physical environment, and intense visual and tactile hallucinations that can persist for several minutes. A sober, alert sitter is mandatory.
The 80x extract deviates from the linear scale because of an extra purification procedure. A strict linear calculation (80 multiplied by 2.5 mg) would yield 200 mg/g. The actual 288 mg/g reflects an additional extraction step that removes impurities and pushes the salvinorin A concentration further upward.
Why salvinorin A works differently from psilocybin or DMT
Salvinorin A is pharmacologically unique. While psilocybin, LSD and DMT exert their effects through the serotonin 5-HT2A receptor, salvinorin A binds to the kappa-opioid receptor (KOR). It is the only known non-alkaloid compound that does so.
This difference in mechanism explains why a salvia experience feels so unlike a truffle or DMT trip. Serotonergic psychedelics typically produce colourful visual patterns, emotional depth and a sense of connectedness. Salvinorin A tends to produce dissociation, gravity shifts, object distortion and a sensation that the boundary between self and environment dissolves. The emotional tone is different too: less euphoria, more bewilderment or awe.
Duration is also strikingly short. After inhalation, the effect peaks within two minutes and is completely gone by 20 to 30 minutes. By comparison, psilocybin lasts four to six hours; smoked DMT fifteen to thirty minutes. Our article on the effects of Salvia divinorum covers the subjective experience in more detail.
Safe use at every strength
Use a torch lighter. Salvinorin A only vaporises above 240 °C. A regular lighter does not reliably reach that temperature, which means part of the active compound is lost and the dose becomes unpredictable.
Weigh your dose. From 5x extract onward, the amounts are small enough that estimating by eye is dangerously imprecise. A milligram scale costs less than ten euros and prevents accidental overdoses.
Have a sober sitter present. From 10x extract upward, awareness of one's surroundings can vanish completely. Users sometimes stand up, walk around or reach for objects without realising what they are doing. A sitter keeps the environment safe.
Choose a quiet, familiar setting. Salvia is not a party substance. The intense dissociative effects are best processed in a calm room, lying or sitting down, without distracting stimuli.
Start low, even at a new extract level. Tolerating 5x well says nothing about how you will react to 20x. The jump in concentration is not linear in terms of subjective experience. At each new level, begin with the lowest recommended dose.
In the Netherlands, Salvia divinorum is not listed under the Opium Act and is legal to buy and use. Legislation varies across the rest of Europe: it is prohibited in Belgium, Germany and Italy, while Spain and Portugal impose restrictions on sale. Always check the regulations that apply in your own country.
Frequently asked questions
Can I combine leaves and extract in a single session?
This is not recommended. The effects of salvinorin A stack, and the duration is so short that re-dosing during an active experience removes control over the intensity. Wait until the effects have fully worn off (at least 45 minutes) before dosing again.
Why is 80x not exactly 16 times stronger than 5x?
The X-number indicates the leaf-to-product ratio, not an exact multiplication of the active compound. At higher concentrations, an additional purification step is applied that yields more salvinorin A per gram than the linear scale predicts. That is why 80x extract contains 288 mg/g rather than the expected 200 mg/g.
How should I store salvia extract?
Cool, dry and out of direct sunlight. Salvinorin A is chemically stable and does not degrade quickly at room temperature, but moisture can damage the leaf material onto which the extract has been applied. A sealed jar in a dark spot is sufficient.
Can I chew extract instead of smoking it?
Extracts are optimised for inhalation. The concentrated salvinorin A on the leaf material does not dissolve well in saliva, making sublingual absorption unreliable. Anyone wanting to try the chewing method is better off using unprocessed leaves: 2 to 10 grams dried, held in the mouth for 15 to 20 minutes.
Which strength is right for a first time?
Leaves or 5x extract. With leaves you need more material (200 to 400 mg), which makes cautious dosing easier. The Enjoy Salvia Pack includes leaves and a lower-strength extract together, so you can compare both.
