Order a mushroom grow kit and you'll see the first pins within ten days. Two weeks later, the box is full of magic mushrooms. A truffle grow kit works differently. You set it up, put it somewhere dark, and then you wait. Four weeks minimum, ideally ten to twelve. The truffles grow underground, invisible, and they don't need daily attention. Just patience.

That sounds like a downside, but it's actually what makes truffle grow kits so easy. No humidity management, no misting, no daily temperature checks. You let nature do its thing. And after about three months, you've got fresh, home-grown magic truffles that are more potent than what you'd pick up in an average smartshop!

Sclerotia aren't roots or seeds

Quick biology lesson. Magic truffles are sclerotia, compact lumps of mycelium that the fungus builds underground as nutrient reserves. Think of them as the mushroom equivalent of a potato. The plant stores energy in a tuber for hard times. A fungus does exactly the same thing, except with mycelium threads that contract into a hard, brownish ball packed with psilocybin.

Mushrooms are the opposite. They grow above ground as fruiting bodies, designed to spread spores. They're the reproductive organ of the fungus, not the pantry. That's why they shoot up fast (they need to release spores before something eats them) and why sclerotia form slowly. There's no rush when you're building reserves.

At Avalon Magic Plants, we sell ready-to-eat truffles, but also grow kits that let you experience the whole process yourself. The Tampanensis truffle grow kit is the clearest example. A jar of colonised rye substrate in which Psilocybe tampanensis slowly builds its sclerotia.

Growing mushrooms vs. growing truffles

With a mushroom grow kit, the work is hands-on. You open the box, add water, place it in a grow bag at 21 to 23 degrees, and then the misting begins. Two to three times a day you spray the inside of the bag, occasionally fan it for fresh air, and keep an eye out for contamination. After about ten days, the first pins appear, and within two weeks you can harvest. A good kit will give you two to three flushes if you get it right. If you haven't done this before, our beginner's guide to mushroom grow kits walks you through it.

Truffle grow kits ask the opposite of you. You do nothing. Genuinely nothing. The jar goes in a dark spot at room temperture, and it stays there. No water, don't open it, don't shake it. The mycelium colonises the substrate and starts forming dense knots after a few weeks, but you won't see that because it all happens inside.

Can I just take a quick peek after six weeks? No, and that's exactly where most people go wrong. Every time you open the jar, you break the sterile environment. Contamination is the biggest enemy of sclerotia growth, and one quick look can cost you the entire batch. We see it come back in customer questions all the time. "I opened the jar after four weeks and now there's something green growing." That green stuff is Trichoderma, and your batch is done.

Tampanensis, a species with a story

Psilocybe tampanensis was discovered in 1977 by mycologist Steven Pollock, in a meadow near Tampa, Florida. One specimen. That single specimen is the only one ever found in the wild, and every cultivation strain that exists today traces back to that one find.

Tampanensis produces relatively large sclerotia, which makes it the most popular species for truffle grow kits. Other sclerotia-forming species (Mexicana, Atlantis, Pajaritos) exist too, but Tampanensis is reliable in both yield and potency. For a first truffle grow, it's simply the best pick.

How the grow kit works

The kit contains a sealed jar of rye substrate already colonised by Tampanensis mycelium. That skips the first phase (spores to agar, agar to grain, sterilisation), so you're starting halfway.

  • Place the jar in a dark spot at room temperature, between 21 and 23 degrees Celsius. Not in sunlight, not next to a heater.
  • Wait at least four weeks. Longer is better: after ten to twelve weeks the sclerotia are larger and more potent.
  • Only open the jar when you harvest. Don't shake it, don't tilt it, don't take the lid off for a preview.

Harvesting is straightforward. Empty the jar into a colander, rinse the substrate off with water, and pick out the truffles. They're knobby, brownish, and smaller than you might expect. An individual sclerotium is rarely bigger than two centimetres. Store whatever you don't use immediately in the fridge, where they keep for at least two weeks.

Why waiting longer gives you more

The four weeks on the packaging is the absolute minimum. We recommend ten to twelve. The sclerotia keep growing throughout the entire process. At four weeks they're small nodules, at twelve weeks they're solid lumps of about a centimetre with a higher psilocybin content.

You can even wait up to twenty weeks. Growth plateaus at some point, but until then every extra week is rewarded. Buying the kit as a gift for next month? Order it now, not in three weeks.

Which truffle grow kit suits you

Besides the Tampanensis, we sell grow kits for several species. The Mexicana grow kit produces slightly milder truffles and works well for first-timers. The Atlantis grow kit sits closer to the Tampanensis in potency. Our truffle comparison covers the the differences between species, strength, and what to expect.
