The Golden Teacher is one of the best-selling mushroom strains at Avalon Magic Plants, and for good reason. It is not the most potent cubensis out there (that distinction belongs to strains like Penis Envy), but it does exactly what first-time growers need: colonise reliably, fruit within two weeks, and deliver a mild enough experience to keep a first session comfortable. Below you will find hard growing data, realistic yield numbers, a strain comparison with B+ and Mexican, and five mistakes that cut your harvest in half.
Where does the Golden Teacher come from?
The Golden Teacher appeared in cultivation circles in the late 1980s, most likely in subtropical Florida. The earliest confirmed public mention is a classified advertisement in the July 1991 issue of High Times magazine. Who first isolated the strain is not documented: some growers point to a find of unusually golden-coloured specimens in the Gulf Coast region, while others claim it was a renamed Hawaiian PES strain.
What is certain: by the mid-1990s Golden Teacher had become the most discussed Psilocybe cubensis cultivar on forums like Shroomery.org, and it still holds that position today. The name refers to two things at once: the golden-yellow colour of the cap and the introspective, "teaching" quality of the experience that users describe.
Scientifically, Golden Teacher is a cultivar of Psilocybe cubensis, a species first described by mycologist Franklin Earle in Cuba in 1906 (then as Stropharia cubensis) and reclassified into the genus Psilocybe by Rolf Singer in 1949.
Why beginners choose Golden Teacher
Three properties make this strain particularly suited to a first grow.
Forgiving mycelium. Golden Teacher mycelium colonises aggressively and tolerates minor fluctuations in temperature and humidity without stalling. Where a Thai or a Copelandia Cyanescens stops at two degrees off target, a Golden Teacher keeps growing.
Mild to moderate potency. Psilocybin content sits around 0.8 to 1.0%, lower than B+ (0.9-1.2%) and considerably lower than Penis Envy (up to 1.8%). For a first encounter, that is an advantage: the effect is clearly noticeable but rarely overwhelming at standard doses.
Consistent yields. A well-maintained Golden Teacher kit reliably produces multiple flushes. The first flush is the largest; after that, yield drops by roughly 30% per flush. After three to five flushes the substrate is spent.
What does a Golden Teacher grow kit yield?
Yield depends on kit size and care. Here are realistic numbers for Golden Teacher kits from the Avalon Magic Plants range.
Mini kit. The Golden Teacher Mini by FreshMushrooms is the entry-level option. Expect 50 to 100 grams of fresh mushrooms over two to three flushes. Dried, that equals 5 to 10 grams.
Medium kit (1200cc). The Golden Teacher Medium 1200cc is the standard choice. Yield: 200 to 400 grams fresh over three to five flushes. The FreshMushrooms 100% Mycelium version typically delivers at the upper end of that range because the substrate is already fully colonised, skipping the colonisation phase entirely.
XL kit (2100cc). The Golden Teacher XL 2100cc is the largest option. With nearly double the substrate volume of a medium kit, you can expect 350 to 700 grams fresh over three to five flushes.
Timeline: from unboxing to harvest
Day 1: open the kit and follow the instructions. For FreshMushrooms kits: fill the bag with water, seal it, and place it somewhere between 22 and 24 degrees Celsius. Do not open it, do not peek.
Day 5 to 10: the first pins appear, tiny white dots on the substrate surface. With a 100% mycelium kit this can happen as early as day four. With a traditional kit the colonisation phase takes longer, and pins appear after two to three weeks.
Day 12 to 18: the mushrooms grow rapidly. Harvest when the veil (the thin membrane between cap and stem) begins to tear, but before it detaches completely. Harvest too early and you lose weight. Harvest too late and the spores release: a black layer over everything that can hamper the next flush.
After the first harvest: fill the kit with cold water (cold shock), leave it for 12 hours, drain, and start again. The second flush typically appears within five to seven days.
Five mistakes that halve your yield
1. Opening the bag too often. Every time you open the bag, humidity drops. One to two brief air exchanges per day is enough. Checking out of curiosity costs you mushrooms.
2. Spraying the substrate directly. Mist the inside of the bag, not the substrate itself. Water pooling directly on the mycelium creates spots where mould can develop. Small droplets on the bag walls are sufficient.
3. Temperature outside the range. Below 20 degrees Celsius growth slows dramatically. Above 26 degrees the mycelium stalls and contamination risk increases. A thermometer next to the kit is not a luxury; it is a necessity.
4. Skipping the cold shock. After the first flush, beginners want to move on quickly. But the cold shock (12 hours submerged in cold water) is the step you cannot skip. Without it, the kit produces significantly less.
5. Giving up after two flushes. The third and fourth flushes are smaller but still contain worthwhile mushrooms. Only when no new pins appear after seven days is the substrate truly spent.
Golden Teacher vs B+ vs Mexican: an honest comparison
All three are cultivars of Psilocybe cubensis. They share roughly 99% of their genetics, comparable to the difference between two apple varieties rather than two different fruits. Still, there are practical differences.
Golden Teacher grows slightly slower than B+ but tolerates more mistakes. Potency is mild to moderate (0.8-1.0% psilocybin). The effect leans toward introspective and cerebral, with waves of euphoria and enhanced colours. Trip duration: four to six hours.
B+ typically produces larger fruit bodies and slightly higher yields. Potency is a fraction higher (0.9-1.2% psilocybin). The effect leans more toward visual and physical: users report geometric patterns and energetic sensations. Trip duration: five to seven hours.
Mexican produces smaller fruit bodies and colonises quickly. Potency is comparable to Golden Teacher, but the experience is often described as lighter and more playful. A good choice for those wanting the smallest possible step.
Keep in mind: psilocybin content varies between batches depending on growing conditions, harvest timing and drying method. The figures above are averages from laboratory analyses, not guarantees.
Legal status
In the Netherlands, the sale of fresh and dried psilocybin mushrooms has been prohibited since 1 December 2008. Grow kits and spores fall outside this ban: the legislation targets the psychoactive substances psilocybin and psilocin, which are not yet present in the kit itself. Once the mushrooms fruit and you harvest them, you are in possession of a prohibited substance under Dutch law.
For customers outside the Netherlands: always check the legislation in your own country before ordering. Rules around grow kits and spores vary between EU member states.
Frequently asked questions
How long until the first mushrooms appear?
With a 100% mycelium kit: five to ten days. With a traditional kit where the mycelium still needs to colonise: two to three weeks.
How many flushes can I expect?
Three to five with proper care. Yield per flush drops by roughly 30%. Stop when no new pins appear after seven days.
What is the ideal temperature?
22 to 24 degrees Celsius. Below 20 degrees growth slows significantly; above 26 degrees the mycelium stalls.
When do I harvest?
As soon as the veil (the membrane between cap and stem) begins to tear. Do not wait until the cap is fully open and the spores are released.
Are Golden Teacher grow kits legal?
In the Netherlands, yes. Grow kits and spores are legally available. The harvested mushrooms themselves fall under the 2008 mushroom ban. Check your own country's legislation if ordering from outside the Netherlands.
