Tuff-100 scale: 100 grams down to a hundredth
The Tuff-100 belongs to the Tuff-Weigh line by On Balance, a series of pocket scales built to survive a knock. The shell is hard plastic in orange and black, with rubber along the sides and corners. That rubber absorbs the impact when the scale rolls off a table and gives you grip at the same time. The lid sits loose on top: take it off, turn it over, put it back and it serves as the weighing tray. That tray is stainless steel and measures 76 by 59 millimetres, roomy enough for a small dish or bag.
Weighing runs to 100 grams in increments of 0.01 gram. The mode key steps through six units, grams plus ounces, troy ounces, pennyweights, carats and grains, which helps when jewellery or gemstones are on the tray. Digits on the display stand about 14 millimetres tall against an orange backlight, so no squinting is needed. The tare key subtracts the weight of a dish or bag from the total, and you set for yourself how quickly the scale switches off. Overload protection is built in, and the two AAA batteries it runs on come in the box.

Getting a steady reading
A precision scale reacts to its surroundings. Put it on a flat, solid surface, away from an open window or a rattling washing machine, since draughts and vibration explain most odd readings. Place the load in the middle of the tray and let the figure settle. To check whether the scale still reads true, use a certified calibration weight rather than a coin from the drawer, because the stated weight of such objects is rarely exact. Wipe the tray with a dry cloth before you click the lid back on.
