Boston 500 x 0.1 g: pocket format with a steel platform
The Boston belongs to the USA Weight scales, the same brand as the Atlanta in this range. It is a flat model that fits an inside pocket: a black housing with a brushed stainless steel platform and a cover that slides off over the top. Stainless steel scratches less easily than a plastic platform and wipes clean without powder or grease soaking into the surface. The display sits in front of the platform, angled towards you and lit in blue, so you can still read it in a dim room.
The capacity runs to 500 grams and the reading moves in steps of 0.1 gram. That suits loose herbs, seeds, powders, jewellery and coins rather than a parcel or a kilo of flour. The cover is the most useful part of this scale: slid over the platform it protects the steel from dust and scratches, and turned upside down on the platform it becomes a tray, so loose grains never sit directly on the metal. Cancel out the weight of that tray by zeroing the scale with the empty cover in place and only then filling it.
Weighing accurately
Put the scale on a flat, solid surface, out of any draught and away from vibration. At tenths of a gram an open window is enough to make the number drift. Wait until the reading settles before you write it down, and never press on the platform to straighten something out. Set heavier objects down gently rather than dropping them: the load cell inside a scale like this minds a knock more than it minds weight.
Maintenance
Keep the platform dry, wipe it with a cloth and store the scale with the cover on. If the reading drifts over time, calibrate it with a proper calibration weight rather than a coin from your pocket. This scale is meant for your own use and is not certified for trade.
