The MY-100-BK is a small compact scale with an oval shape. That rounded housing of 9.3 by 6.1 centimetres is not just a styling choice: it sits comfortably in the hand and has no sharp corners to snag on a pocket lining. At 1.9 centimetres thick and under 65 grams with the batteries in, you barely notice it is there. The weighing platform measures 5.5 by 5.2 centimetres and the scale reads up to 100 grams in hundredths of a gram.

The lid comes off. Closed, it protects the platform from scratches and dust; removed, it works as a tray for herbs, powder or small parts you would rather not place straight onto the metal. Put the tray on the platform, press tare and the display returns to zero, so you only see the weight of what goes in. The scale offers four weighing modes and can be recalibrated whenever readings start to drift. After a few minutes without use it powers down by itself, which spares the two AAA batteries. Within the range this is one of the more affordable models that still reads to a hundredth of a gram.

Getting accurate readings

Put the scale on a flat, hard surface rather than on a bed or on your knee. After switching on, wait until the display rests at zero before you place anything on the platform, and keep the unit away from draughts: at hundredths of a gram a moving airflow counts. Wipe the platform with a dry cloth and store the scale with the lid clipped on.
