DJ-100 Jewel mini scale: 100 grams down to hundredths

The DJ-100 belongs to the On Balance Jewel range, scales shaped like a small jewellery box. Closed, it is a flat case that sits in the palm of your hand, roughly 9.5 by 6.2 centimetres and under two centimetres thick. The lid clips off and turns over onto the load cell, giving you a stainless steel platform of about 5.4 by 5.5 centimetres. Without batteries the whole thing weighs a little over seventy grams.

The cell reads up to 100 grams in steps of 0.01 gram, which puts the DJ-100 firmly in small-quantity territory: herbs, seeds, jewellery, coins, kitchen powders. One button cycles through grams, pennyweight, carats and grains, four modes in total. The screen has a blue backlight, so the figures stay sharp on a poorly lit table. After about three minutes of inactivity the scale shuts itself down to save the batteries.

Getting an accurate reading

Put the scale on a flat, stable surface and let it settle on zero after switching on. Use the tare button when you weigh inside a dish or on a slip of paper, so only the contents count. Keep the stainless platform clean and dry, and store the scale with the lid closed so dust stays off the cell.
