Ecstasy (MDMA) test by Dope or Nope: a colour reaction on a shaving of pill
This kit is made to check a sample for MDMA, the active substance an ecstasy pill is supposed to contain. You get a glass ampoule filled with reagent plus a colour chart showing the reactions that reagent can produce. No equipment is needed, and a small shaving off the pill is enough material to work with.
Reagent tests rely on discolouration. The reagent reacts with the substance in your sample, and both the shade and the speed of the change say something about what is in there. That makes such a test useful against an adulterated market: it shows whether a pill holds something other than what it was sold as. Keep the sample small, because the ratio between reagent and substance is calculated for that amount.
Running the test
- Take the ampoule holding the reagent
- Break the ampoule and add your sample
- Twist the cap you have just removed
- Put the cap back onto the ampoule
- Compare the colour with the supplied table
What the result does and does not tell you
If the colour appears on the chart, the sample probably contains (part of) the matching substance. That says nothing about purity, nothing about how much active substance is present, and nothing about safety, since a sample may also hold something the test does not recognise. No reaction, or an unexpected shade, at least rules out the substances listed in the table, but what is actually there stays unknown. That may be harmless and it may be dangerous. Dope or Nope neither condones nor condemns drug use, yet recognises that banned substances get used regardless of their legal status. There is no safe use of drugs, and you use this test at your own risk.
Safety and storage
The ampoule contains a strong acid. Keep the test out of reach of children, avoid contact with eyes and skin, and rinse with plenty of water should contact occur.
