Dope or Nope speed test: reading colour and reaction speed
The kit consists of a glass ampoule with reagent and a card showing the possible colours. No equipment is involved and you are done within a few minutes. Use a small sample: the ratio between sample and reagent is set up for that, and too much material clouds the colour and makes it harder to compare.
In this test the colour is only half the signal; how quickly it appears counts as well. Substances from the amphetamine group turn the reagent in their own way, faster or slower, and that pace is part of the reading. Related substances can produce a similar change, so the test points at a group rather than one exact molecule. Reagent tests like this exist to reveal adulteration, in other words to show whether a sample contains something other than what it was sold as. They do not replace laboratory analysis and give no measurement, so how much of a substance is present remains unknown.
How to run the test
- Take the ampoule with the reagent
- Break the ampoule and add a small sample
- Rotate the cap you have just removed
- Place the cap back on the ampoule
- Compare the colour with the table supplied
What the result does and does not tell you
If you see a colour that appears on the card, the sample probably contains (part of) the matching substance. That does not make it pure, and certainly not safe: it may also hold something the test does not recognise. If no reaction follows, or the colour differs from the chart, none of the substances in the table is involved, and what is actually there remains unknown. That can be harmless and it can be dangerous; throw such a sample away. Dope or Nope neither condones nor condemns use, but recognises that banned substances are used regardless of their legal status. There is no safe use of drugs, and no rights or guarantees can be derived from a result.
Safety and storage
The ampoule contains a strong acid. Keep the kit out of reach of children, avoid contact with eyes and skin because it causes irritation, and rinse with plenty of water after contact. Store the test cool and dark, below 35 degrees, in its original packaging.
