Kratom Bali red 20X: concentrated leaf of Mitragyna speciosa
Kratom is the collective name for the leaf of Mitragyna speciosa Korth., a tropical tree of 4 to 16 metres that grows natively across Southeast Asia and also occurs in the Philippines and New Guinea. The species belongs to the madder family Rubiaceae, the same family as the coffee plant. In its home regions the fresh or dried leaf is traditionally chewed or brewed as a tea, particularly by people doing heavy physical work, and the leaf also has a place in socioreligious customs.
The word red refers to the colour of the leaf vein. Red, green and white are trade designations used to sort batches of leaf, not botanical varieties. Bali is the origin name this leaf is traded under. This product is not loose leaf but an extract: a 20X designation means that roughly 20 grams of leaf has been reduced to 1 gram of powder. Several indole alkaloids have been described in the leaf, among them mitragynine, speciogynine, speciociliatine and 7-hydroxymitragynine. On what those compounds do, we make no claims.
Preparation
Kratom has traditionally been prepared in a handful of ways. The powder can be stirred into hot water, tea or coffee, or mixed with a little honey or into a smoothie to soften the bitter taste. Because this is an extract rather than loose leaf, the amounts involved are much smaller: the existing product information on this page lists 0.10 to 0.20 grams. Weigh it on a fine scale instead of scooping by eye, and keep the powder dry, dark and tightly closed.
