MMZ-600 precision scale: 600 grams in 0.1 gram steps
The MMZ-600 belongs to the Mini MZ series by Myco, the scale brand of On Balance. It is a flip model with a hinged cover that folds over the weighing platform, keeping the stainless steel surface free of scratches and crumbs while the scale rides along in a drawer or a coat pocket. Opened up, that platform measures roughly 6.3 by 5.8 centimetres. The scale itself is about 10.9 x 6.8 x 1.7 centimetres and comes to around 88 grams with batteries in place. Its LCD carries green backlighting, so the digits stay legible on a poorly lit bench.
The range runs to 600 grams, read in increments of 0.1 gram. That puts the MMZ-600 in the territory where a kitchen scale showing whole grams turns too coarse, while a milligram scale runs out of capacity. The tare or zero function subtracts the weight of a dish, a bag or an expansion tray from the total, leaving only the contents on screen. Built-in overload protection guards against a load heavier than the scale accepts. Three minutes without activity and it shuts itself down to save the batteries. Calibration takes a single button, though you do need a proper calibration weight to run it.
Getting readings you can trust
Stand the scale on a flat, solid surface rather than your knee or a wobbly side table. Draughts, vibration and a sloping support account for the great majority of odd readings. Keep the platform clean and dry, and never press on it to straighten something out. Calibrate with a certified weight instead of a coin, because the stated mass of everyday objects is rarely exact.
